Stranger Things spoilers follow.
Stranger Things star Matthew Modine is convinced that he could return in the next season, despite being killed off in season four.
Modine, who plays Dr Martin Brenner or Papa, met his end in the second volume of the last season of the hit Netflix series, after being shot repeatedly by a sniper as he attempted to save Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).
There was no doubt in viewers' minds that Brenner died, as we even saw his last breathe on screen. However, Modine has shared his own theory of the supernatural way that Brenner could come back to haunt Elle.
In an interview with Vulture, Modine admitted that he wouldn't say that Brenner is actually dead.
"No, I wouldn't. Because I wouldn't want him to be dead," he said, before reflecting on how Brenner could have escaped death.
"Three things are curious to me: How did he survive the Demogorgon [in season 1]? How did he survive One?
"And when Eleven tries to use her power against Dr. Brenner after blowing three guards in the air, he unflinchingly thwarts her and says: 'You didn't think it was going to be that easy, did you?'. She couldn't get it to work on him. Is there something more to Brenner than meets the eye?"
Modine added he hopes that his journey on the hit series isn't over as he enjoys working with Brown, who he shares most of his scenes with.
"I don't want to believe it's over, because I love the Duffers," Modine explained. "I don't want to believe it's over, because I can't wait to work with Millie again. I say Millie, because I don't really have anything to do with the other cast members – except for Paul Reiser."
It wouldn't be out of the question for Brenner to have secret superpowers, but keeping them quiet for four seasons for one more comeback in the final season might be out of the question.
And despite Modine's hopes for a valiant return, series creators the Duffer brothers have confirmed Brenner is "definitively" dead.
Stranger Things seasons 1-4 are now streaming worldwide on Netflix.
